Queen of Carthage (2015)

Queen of Carthage 2015

US Title:
Queen of Carthage
Year:
2015
Country:
New Zealand
Director:
Mardana M. Mayginnes

What’s It About?
A young American escaping from a troubled relationship moves to New Zealand and befriends an aspiring singer and his girlfriend. (No, that’s a lie. This movie is really about perpetuating dangerous stereotypes of trauma survivors and gay men.)

Short Review: 100 Words or Less (no spoilers)
In addition to its many cinematic flaws including an unlikeable protagonist, a confusing timeline and a snaillike pace, the overall message of this movie is incredibly disappointing and insulting. The film’s ending is so lazy and so homophobic that I thought “surely that was just a fake dream sequence, right?” But nope. Perpetuating an outdated Hollywood stereotype that a gay guy can’t handle a breakup or a rejection without turning into a homicidal maniac is just… I don’t even have the words to express how fucking dumb and damaging that is nowadays. Shame on these writers.
