The 5th Wave 2016

US Title:
The 5th Wave
Year:
2016
Country:
US
Director:
J Blakeson

What’s It About?
Aliens invade earth in a series of four increasingly destructive waves. A teenage girl, all alone, tries to find and rescue her younger brother before the fifth and final wave strikes.

Short Review: 100 Words or Less (no spoilers)
It starts with so much potential, but then sadly devolves into a messy, mediocre hybrid of weird teenage love triangle and sci-fi B-movie with some massive plot holes. I found myself more invested in the subplot with the brother and the child soldiers (led by underrated Nick Robinson), and rolling my eyes at the numerous clichés in the main plot: “Is this handsome stranger a friend or foe?” “Should I give him my heart or pine for my maybe-dead crush?” “He shot me to save me.” Ugh!! No offense to lead Chloë Grace Moretz; this script really lets her down.

Final Grade: D+
